The more people he killed the less significant they became, because they were just names to him. Kira!Light was rationalising his crimes and following what would seem to him a logical progression from ‘kill someone currently endangering people’ to 'kill someone who hurt someone in the past’ then to 'kill anyone trying to stop me from bringing “justice”’. I think it should also be noted that Kira!Light had different experiences of the situations and the case to Investigator!Light. You could also interpret it as him not knowing himself as well as he thinks he does, or theorise about the corruptive influence of power and general lack of immediate consequences (and later repeated validation of his actions by the public) in relation to his character as you did.įrom memory, he also claims that most people lie about their opinions on whether or not certain people “deserve to die” because of expectation, so that’s something to consider about Light. Whilst the contrast is jarring, Light also has like no concept of self reflection and exactly zero self awareness. i don’t buy that the power to kill at will would so fundamentally change the human capacity for empathy. I find that his characters with and without the notebook are incompatible. when he acquires the book he becomes devoid of empathy. he speaks as though taking on the kira role was some great sacrifice but his inner monologue shows that this isn’t the case. his blatant disregard for human life when it comes to protecting his identity is proof of this. he cares more about being the one to create the perfect world than to actually see such a world. he claims to want to create a better world but his actions show that this comes from a place of ego rather than caring for the world in any respect. I agree to some extent, but not to that extent. that the possession of the book, the power of life and death fundamentally changes people. the implication is that as kira, he’s only doing what other people would do but are too scared to admit to. in that period we see that he seems to be mostly normal in the amount of empathy and human connection he is capable of. he concludes that while kira kills people in accordance with light’s own personal moral code, light would never, even if he could. when he doesn’t have the notebook or his memories, he muses on what he would do if he had it. When light has the death note, he seems to be a different person altogether.
